Hannah Goddard was one of four people from Mayfield Church to go to Russia this summer as part of the East Ohio Conference Volunteers in Mission trip. Here are her thoughts about the two-week journey to the Kursk region and the Oboyan Orphanage.
My Russia experience started almost a year ago when my sister and I first started fund raising -- not only for the trip itself but also for a new playground set for the children at the orphanage. Without the generosity of the church, none of that would have been possible, and for this I would like to say “spasebo” (“thank you”). It was very touching to see how small comtributions like Beanie Babies from Mayfield made so many kids happy 5,000 miles away. Read more...

Our Trip to Guatemala

In anticipation of helping the people of Guatemala, eight of us from Mayfield Church boarded the plane to Houston to meet up with the team from Southern Hills UMC in Lexington, Ky. Two of us had never flown before. Meeting the team in Houston, we had an immediate connection: our hearts for serving the Lord!
When arriving in Guatemala after a nightmare landing on a runway about one-third the size of a normal runway, we were scooped away by our host, Edgar Ramos. We were brought to a mission house called "Mimi's House," where we were warmly greeted and assigned sleeping quarters fit for a king or queen. Our team was briefed on the events of the week, which included a block house addition for a family of eight, working with the local pastor at a veterinary clinic, building chicken coops, teaching lessons at the El Girron school and helping to work on the "TEAM " house at the Mimi's House site location so that more American teams can come.
